Learning and Leadership Opportunities
“If you have come here to help me, you are wasting your time, but if your liberation is bound with mine, then let us work together.”
- Lilla Watson
When individuals choose to collaborate with others as a group to leverage their collective gifts, skills, and talents and achieve a common good for the community, they have chosen the path of leadership.
NBN’s working groups are where learning and organizing collide. Working groups are resident-led learning circles where groups discuss, discover, and learn more about topics of interest to the community and their impact.
Groups who complete a working group session have the knowledge and understanding to develop individual and/or collective action plans to take action in their community.
How to Facilitate a Working Group
Working group sessions can range from 3 to 6 months and meet on a schedule agreed upon by the group participants. Working groups are resident-led learning spaces, and anyone can start a group based on their interests.
In order to host a group, NBN requires leaders to attend our Facilitator Training workshop offered bimonthly at our office. NBN provides support for working groups by providing a meeting space, marketing of the group, coaching for facilitators, and childcare services if available. If you are interested in joining a group or starting one, please contact us via phone or email.
Neighbors in Action (NIA)
Neighbors in Action (NIA) is a five-session leadership and learning boot camp developed to strengthen grassroots groups. Groups working in NIA will learn conflict resolution, meeting facilitation, community organizing, and project planning.
Neighbors In Action supports the development of neighborhood organizers. We do this by providing spaces for learning, connecting, reflection, and practice to develop their leadership skills.
NBN provides ongoing training and development through workshop opportunities. Our community engagement workshops provide residents with an understanding of complex issues facing communities. Topics include:
