The Communities We Serve

Forsyth County

The goal? To strengthen assets, lessen poverty, and create systems change that reaches the rural areas of Forsyth County. Every community has its own unique challenges and opportunities. Solutions are not one-size-fits-all.

City of

Winston- Salem

As we partner with neighbors in our city, we don’t believe in a “savior” approach to poverty alleviation, but understand that connections to neighborhood associations, multiple organizations and coalitions over time creates change.

Place-Matters Communities

Through our partnership with United Way of Forsyth County we’re dedicated to their four priority areas of financial stability, health, education and basic needs. Place-Matters is a complementary, asset-based strategy within Northeast Winston-Salem.

Economic Mobility

Training and Technical Assistance

The quality of life outcomes, such as affordable housing, quality education, living wage employment, healthy environments, and transportation are equitably experienced by the people currently living and working in a neighborhood, as well as for new people moving in. Public and private investments, programs, and policies in neighborhoods that meet the needs of residents, including communities of color, and reduce racial disparities, taking into account past history and current conditions.

Residents

Strengthened the voices of over 300 residents through leadership development in one or more of the following learning modules: Racial Equity, Asset Based Community Development, Asset Mapping, How to Start a Neighborhood Association, Conflict Resolution, or Community Organizing.

WS/FC School Board Members

Engaged 6 of the 9 Winston-Salem Forsyth County School Board Members, 5 Administrative School Officials, School Title-One leadership team of 20 teachers and 6 Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School principals in Racial Equity Workshops to provide a racial equity lens to disparities in education in minority schools.

Grassroots Grants

The ability of an individual or family to improve their income, and social status, in an individual life or between generations.

Initiatives

Funded over 21 neighborhood initiatives that ranged from local community gardens to S.T.E.M. programs.

Neighborhoods

Hosted grassroots grant peer-to-peer retreat that engaged 12 neighborhood groups in a cross sharing of information and community building.

Neighbors

Provided 9 neighbors with funding to host neighborhood conversations to discuss community issues to gain a consensus before applying for grassroots grants.

Civic Engagement

Strengthening Neighborhoods & Family Programs

Working to make a difference in the civic life of our communities and developing the combination of knowledge, skills, values, and opportunities that produce self-determined citizens. It is promoting the quality of life and capacity of a community, through both political and non-political processes.

Reached over 3,680 door-to-door connections and conversation through passing out flyers and listening conversation.

Hosted

Hosted over 28 Organizer’s Circles connecting 15 grassroots leaders to agencies and institutions with floating meetings held in over 8 different places in Winston-Salem.
